I love the way that you have written this article, like anything AI has its advantages and disadvantages. The main problem with a lot of these technologies and online advances, is that they happen before we can really assess and digest them. The problem is not the technology itself, it how we decide to use it and how we prepare for it totally reshaping our jobs and income at such a fast rate over the coming decades.
Absolutely. The biggest problem is that tech moves so fast and politics moves so slow, so the dude bros are always ahead of any regulations or legislation. By the time the system has caught up, they've found loopholes, infiltrated the system so they can protect themselves, or moved on to something new. We need to have processes in place whereby new technologies can't be introduced before they've been assessed and regulated. Like medicine.
So refreshing to see a balanced perspective about AI. Although I diverge on a couple of minor points, you’ve very eloquently captured my own thoughts about AI and its place in our society.
Thank you! I think balance is important. We're not all going to agree on everything but we need to be able to discuss these topics calmly without seeing it as an opportunity for point scoring.
Thank you so much for writing a balanced post about this topic. I wrote recently about how the huge polarization in AI (it's saving the world vs. it's ruining the world) is hard on the nervous system but what I didn't really address, because I haven't found words for it, yet, is how harmful it is that it's pitting creatives against each other when we're already facing enough hardship.
I faced this recently when I saw that the first Amazon review of my new workbook got one star and it was entirely because the person didn't realize before buying it that I utilize AI in my process. It hurt more than I would like to admit, because those bad reviews can be so damaging to sales and it doesn't show the extreme effort I put into creating that. They learned it was AI-assisted because I put a very clear AI disclosure at the start of it, because I want to be transparent about how I do and don't use it and in this case it felt like it bit me. Having put literally decades into the research and writing and material and framework, getting some of the hate I've been getting for the role AI has played in assisting me with organizing my thoughts, figuring out layout questions, doing marketing ... it's really frustrating.
Which is really all to say again that I just appreciate you having an opinion, sharing the opinion, and acknowledging it's not the only "right" opinion. I share most of what you have said here and don't resonate with a few things and that's how it should be! We shouldn't shame each other and should be able to discuss! So thank you.
Thank you Kathryn! I hate how polarised everything in our society seems to have become. You have to be 100% in favour or 100% against, there's no room for nuance. Everyone busy finding the highest horse, no one looking for actual solutions or positive impact. It's infuriating.
